FSC Certified Packaging: What US & Canada Brands Need to Know

Short answer: FSC certified packaging is made from paper and board that come from responsibly managed forests, tracked through a certified chain of custody. To put the FSC label on your box, the printer must hold a valid FSC chain-of-custody certificate and the order must be produced and invoiced as FSC. Why brands ask for FSC

More retailers and end customers in the US and Canada ask about the materials in packaging. FSC is one of the most recognized ways to show that paper fibers come from responsible sources. For hardware, bathroom and home brands, it is an easy upgrade: the box looks and performs the same, and the label tells the story.

What "FSC certified" actually covers

  • Material: the paper and board come from FSC-certified or controlled sources.

  • Chain of custody: every company that takes ownership of the material, including the printer, must be certified so the claim isn't broken.

  • Label: the on-pack logo shows the claim type and the printer's licence code.

A brand can only use the FSC label correctly if the product came through certified suppliers. Asking for the certificate code, and checking it in the public FSC database, is a simple first step.

For many hardware, bathroom and home brands, the request starts with a retailer or a large distributor asking about packaging sources during onboarding or a line review. Having FSC packaging in place before that conversation makes it simpler, and the change usually does not need a new structure or new tooling. The existing dieline and artwork can normally be reused, with the label added.

How to order FSC packaging

1. Say so at the quote stage. FSC material must be planned and purchased for your order.

2. Confirm the claim type for the materials used.

3. Send artwork with space for the label. We supply the correct label artwork and placement guidance, and the label goes through approval before printing.

4. Keep the paperwork. Invoices for FSC orders carry the claim and certificate code, which you may need for retailer audits.

Does FSC change cost or lead time?

FSC board can cost a little more depending on grade and availability. We show it clearly in the quote. Lead times stay the same as standard orders: color boxes and card boxes typically 7–15 days, depending on specs; displays typically 10–20 days; gift boxes typically 15–30 days.

Common FSC mistakes

  • Adding the logo without a certified order. Using the label on packaging that was not produced as FSC can cause problems in a retailer audit.

  • Copying old label artwork. Each label carries the licence code of the certified company and must be approved. Always use the artwork supplied for your order.

  • Asking too late. If FSC is requested after material is purchased, the order may need new board and a later start.

  • Mixing claims across SKUs. If only part of a range is FSC, keep the artwork files clearly separated.

A simple checklist

1. Ask your printer for the FSC certificate code and check it is valid.

2. Request FSC on the quote and purchase order.

3. Get the label artwork from the printer and leave space on the dieline.

4. Approve the proof including the label.

5. Keep FSC invoices on file for retailer and customer questions.
