Short answer: Recycled and virgin paperboard can both make solid folding cartons and color boxes. They often look and feel different under print and light. Strength talk belongs on samples and agreed tests — not invented numbers in a marketing brief. An FSC claim on the box is valid only when the order is produced and sold as FSC under a valid chain-of-custody certificate; you can check BOYA’s licence code FSC-C157096 on search.fsc.org.

Key points

  • Compare look and print behaviour on a physical sample of your structure.

  • Do not treat “recycled” or “virgin” as a substitute for a strength rating.

  • FSC on the box requires an FSC order — CoC covers certified materials when ordered as FSC.

  • Verify the supplier’s FSC code yourself before you rely on the claim.

1. Who this guide is for

Buyers choosing board for retail color boxes, gift sleeves and related paper packaging who need a plain comparison of recycled vs virgin look — and a clear way to check FSC claims — without a materials science essay or price table.

Zhongshan Boya Color Printing Co., Ltd. (BOYA Printing) in Xiaolan makes color boxes (folding cartons), corrugated color cartons and handmade rigid gift boxes. Graphic and structural packaging design is available. MOQ from 1,000 pcs, depending on product and process.

2. What “recycled” and “virgin” usually mean on a box RFQ

On packaging RFQs, buyers typically mean:

  • Virgin paperboard — fibre that has not been through a previous paper product cycle (as described by the mill grade you specify)

  • Recycled paperboard — board that includes recovered fibre (share and grade depend on the mill sheet you order)

Mills sell many named grades. We do not invent fibre percentages or brand-grade tables here. Write the mill grade or performance intent on the RFQ and confirm on a printed sample of your dieline.

For a wider materials overview, see our buyer’s guide to materials, printing and finishing.

3. Look and print: what usually changes

Without inventing lab values, buyers often notice:

  • Surface colour and cleanliness — recycled sheets can show a warmer or more variable base; virgin sheets are often chosen when a bright white face is part of the brand look

  • Print snap and ink holdout — both can print well; the right primer, ink and finish matter as much as the fibre story

  • Feel in the hand — stiffness and “snap” differ by caliper and grade, not only by recycled vs virgin labels

  • Edge and score behaviour — confirm folding and cracking on a sample of your structure

Approve a color sample on the board you intend to run. Do not assume a recycled sheet will match a virgin proof you already signed.

4. Strength talk without invented numbers

Buyers ask whether recycled board is “weaker.” The honest answer for RFQs:

  • Strength depends on grade, caliper, flute (if corrugated), structure and how the box is packed — not on a single recycled/virgin slogan

  • Do not publish crush, burst or ECT numbers in a marketing brief unless a named test method and result are agreed for that order

  • Testing can be arranged when an order needs checks; that is not the same as claiming an in-house accredited lab or a third-party certification you do not hold

For corrugated structures, see also corrugated color boxes. For rigid wraps, board choice sits under rigid gift boxes.

5. How to check an FSC claim on your box

FSC chain of custody applies to certified materials only when the order is placed and invoiced as FSC. A factory that holds FSC CoC can still run non-FSC jobs; those boxes should not carry an FSC label or claim.

BOYA’s codes: licence FSC-C157096, certificate SAI-COC-004938, valid to 2030-05-12.

Quick check:

  1. Ask for the licence code (FSC-C…) and certificate code (for example SAI-COC-…).

  2. Look the code up on the public FSC information / certificate search at search.fsc.org.

  3. Confirm status is Valid, the organisation name matches who invoices you, dates cover your delivery, and scope covers paper packaging.

  4. On FSC orders, keep the invoice claim and code with your records; use only the label artwork supplied for that order.

Do not treat every box from an FSC-certified plant as “FSC certified packaging.” The claim follows the order, not the building.

6. What to put on the RFQ

  • Recycled / virgin / named mill grade (or “match this sample”)

  • Caliper or board callout if known

  • Structure (folding carton, corrugated color carton, rigid wrap)

  • Print sides, finishes, window or insert yes/no

  • Whether the job must be ordered as FSC (yes/no) and label placement if yes

  • Quantity and ship-to terms

MOQ from 1,000 pcs, depending on product and process.

7. Lead time, certifications and factory basics

Typical lead times, depending on specifications: color boxes 7–15 days; folding cartons 10–25 days; craft/rigid gift boxes 15–45 days; tea, wine and mooncake boxes 15–30 days; display stands 10–20 days.

We hold ISO 9001, FSC (FSC-C157096) and ONE (formerly GMI) certification. About 128 people; four offset presses. Factory card: /about. We reply to inquiries within 24 hours.

FAQ

Recycled or virgin paperboard — which looks better on a color box?

It depends on the grade and the brand look you need. Compare a printed sample of your dieline on each candidate board rather than choosing from the label alone.

Is recycled paperboard always weaker?

Not as a slogan. Strength depends on grade, caliper and structure. Confirm on a sample; testing can be arranged when an order needs checks. This guide does not publish numeric strength ratings.

How do I check an FSC claim on my packaging?

Look up the supplier’s FSC licence or certificate code on search.fsc.org, confirm Valid status and matching company name, and order/invoice the job as FSC if you need the claim on the box. BOYA’s licence code is FSC-C157096 (SAI-COC-004938).

Does FSC-C157096 mean every BOYA box is FSC?

No. FSC chain of custody covers certified materials when the order is placed and sold as FSC. Non-FSC jobs should not carry an FSC claim.

What is BOYA’s MOQ for folding cartons on recycled or virgin board?

MOQ from 1,000 pcs, depending on product and process.

How long do color boxes and folding cartons take?

Typical lead times, depending on specifications: color boxes 7–15 days; folding cartons 10–25 days; craft/rigid gift boxes 15–45 days; tea, wine and mooncake boxes 15–30 days; display stands 10–20 days.
