Short answer: Name the job on the RFQ — moisture barrier, scuff resistance, or a decorative highlight — then pick a finish BOYA runs: lamination, in-line press varnish / coating, a wax or water-based barrier, or spot UV as a decorative accent. Specs follow the written confirmation.

  • Name the risk: humid route / warehouse vs rub and scuff on the print face

  • Confirmed finishes: lamination; spot UV; waterproof coating (wax or water-based barrier); in-line coating on coater-equipped presses

  • Spot UV is usually decorative — not a stand-alone moisture barrier (what is spot UV)

  • Humid hardware routes: waterproof coatings available (hardware packaging from Zhongshan)

  • Xiaolan, Zhongshan factory since 2003: about 20,000 m², 128 people; 4 offset presses

  • FSC-C157096; ISO 9001:2015; ONE (formerly GMI) certified

  • MOQ from 1,000 pcs, depending on product and process; color boxes and card boxes typically 7–15 days, rigid gift boxes typically 15–45 days, depending on quantity, process and box style

This guide is how to specify functional coatings on folding cartons and color boxes so quotes stay comparable.

1. Start with the risk, not the nickname

“UV,” “gloss,” “waterproof,” and “anti-scratch” are not interchangeable on press. Answer two questions in writing before you name a coating:

1. Moisture — humid storage, sea freight, or outdoor / garden retail?

2. Scuff — rub in transit, on shelf, or under shrink and stacking?

Pick a finish that matches that risk. A decorative gloss spot will not protect board in a humid warehouse.

2. Four finishes BOYA can put on the quote

Foil, cold foil and embossing are available when the brief asks (see when embossing is worth it); this section stays on moisture and scuff.

Lamination (film). A plastic film over the printed sheet — commonly matte or gloss — when the print face must resist rub. Other film types (for example soft-touch) are confirmed per project. Write film type, coverage, and keep-outs (glue flaps, barcodes, windows).

In-line press varnish / coating. Two of four presses carry a coater unit (+L): KBA Rapida 105-6+L and KBA Rapida 142-5+L. In-line varnish or aqueous-style coating can add sheen and a basic rub layer without film — often lighter than lamination. Agree look and rub in writing. The other presses are Heidelberg CD102 (5-colour) and Roland 900 (4-colour, 1.6 m); path depends on the job.

Waterproof coating (wax or water-based barrier). For humid routes or storage, ask for a waterproof / moisture-resistant coating — at BOYA, a wax or water-based barrier confirmed for the job. Available for humid shipping and storage; hardware context: Hardware & Tool Packaging from a Zhongshan Factory.

Spot UV (decorative accent). Spot UV adds gloss on selected areas — often over matte lamination for contrast. It is an accent, not a full moisture barrier. Detail: What Is Spot UV on Packaging?. For full-face scuff resistance, prefer lamination or an agreed overall varnish.

3. What to put in the RFQ

Spec line

What to write

Risk

Moisture / scuff / both — plus route notes

Finish family

Lamination / in-line varnish / wax or water-based barrier / spot UV (or combo)

Coverage & look

Full face, panels, or spot mark-up; matte / gloss / soft-touch if needed

Keep-outs

Glue flaps, tear tape, barcodes, windows

Board & qty

Style / caliper preference; quantity per design

Certs if needed

e.g. FSC-labelled material — CoC FSC-C157096

MOQ from 1,000 pcs, depending on product and process. Color boxes and card boxes typically 7–15 days, rigid gift boxes typically 15–45 days, depending on quantity, process and box style. For corrugated styles, see corrugated color boxes.

Useful combos: humid + retail face → barrier plus matte/gloss film when rub is also a risk (one sample); dry DC + high shelf rub → full lamination, spot UV where design needs a highlight; light protection → in-line varnish when film is not required.

If your brand needs a named third-party test, put it in the RFQ and we will confirm what we can support.

4. Sampling, QC and plant facts

Sampling is available. Approve coating look and rub on a printed sample when the finish is new. QC follows the written specification and the approved sample. Specs follow the written confirmation. Lock colour against the coated sample you intend to ship. We are ONE (formerly GMI) certified for offset printing.

Four offset presses: KBA Rapida 105-6+L; KBA Rapida 142-5+L (full sheet); Heidelberg CD102 (5-colour); Roland 900 4-colour 1.6 m. FAQ

Q: What should I specify for a moisture-resistant color box coating?

Name the humid route or storage risk, then ask for a waterproof / moisture-resistant coating — at BOYA, a wax or water-based barrier confirmed for the job — and whether you also need film for rub. Put keep-outs in writing.

Q: Is spot UV enough for scuff resistance on the whole box?

Usually no. Spot UV highlights selected areas. For full-face rub resistance, specify lamination or an agreed overall varnish. See what is spot UV.

Q: Do you offer waterproof coatings for humid shipping?

Yes. Waterproof and moisture-resistant coatings are available. For hardware-route context, see hardware packaging from Zhongshan.

Q: Which BOYA presses can apply in-line coating?

KBA Rapida 105-6+L and KBA Rapida 142-5+L include a coater unit (+L). Ask us to confirm the path on the quotation.

Q: What is the MOQ and lead time for coated color boxes?

MOQ from 1,000 pcs, depending on product and process. Color boxes and card boxes typically 7–15 days, rigid gift boxes typically 15–45 days, depending on quantity, process and box style.
