How to Spec a Color Box for Hardware & Tools: Flute, Liner, Print, Hand-Hole

Short answer: A good spec for a hardware color box covers six things: product weight and size, flute and board, liner and print, structure (hand-hole, hanging hole, window, closure), inserts for loose parts, and packing (master carton and pallet). Get these right and you'll get comparable quotes, a sample that fits the first time, and boxes that survive shipping and look right on the shelf.

1. Start from the product, not the box

Measure the product in its packed state, including blister, bag or tie. Give inner box dimensions in millimeters, plus the gross weight. Heavy items like tool sets, locks and fittings decide most of the structure. Sharp edges and loose parts decide the inserts.

2. Flute and board

  • Thinner flutes give a flatter surface for high-quality offset graphics on smaller, lighter products.

  • Thicker flutes, or double wall, add crush and stacking strength for heavier tools and bigger kits.

  • Tell us the stacking height in the warehouse and the shipping route (ocean, long trucking). We match the board to those conditions and confirm it on a sample. We check samples in-house with burst-strength and board-compression testers.

3. Liner and print

Litho-laminated color boxes carry an offset-printed paper facing, which suits product photos, spec panels and multilingual text. Specify:

  • Number of colors and any Pantone spot colors (for brand colors that must match across SKUs)

  • Coverage: full flood color or mostly white

  • Barcode position, and whether you need barcode grading. We verify barcodes in-house to an A–F grade. See retail carton barcode verification.

BOYA is a ONE (formerly GMI) certified print facility for offset printing, which helps keep color consistent from run to run.

4. Structure: hand-holes, hanging holes, windows, closures

  • Hand-hole: for boxes customers carry by hand. Specify the position and whether it needs reinforcement.

  • Hanging hole / hang tab: for pegboard merchandising. Specify the hole style and position relative to the product's center of gravity, so the box hangs straight.

  • Window: shows the product. Specify the film type and window size.

  • Closure: tuck end, auto-lock bottom or crash-lock for heavier items.

5. Inserts for kits and loose parts

Die-cut corrugated or paperboard inserts keep every bit, screw and bracket in place and stop metal from rubbing the print. Send a parts list and photos. We design the insert around them and check the fit on the structural sample.

6. Finishes that earn their place

Lamination (matte, gloss or soft-touch), spot UV, hot or cold foil and embossing all lift a premium tool line. Water-resistant coatings help in humid containers and garden-center shelving. Choose finishes based on how the product is sold.

7. Packing and delivery

State the number of units per master carton, the carton marks, the pallet size and the delivery point: FOB, or direct to your assembly factory in China.

FAQ

Which flute is best for hand tools?

It depends on weight and stacking. Send the gross weight and stacking height, and we'll recommend a board and confirm it on a sample.

Can you add a hanging hole to a corrugated color box?

Yes. Specify the style and position, and we'll check that the box hangs straight on the sample.

Do you design inserts for multi-part kits?

Yes. We make die-cut corrugated or paperboard inserts and check them with a physical sample.

Can you match brand colors across many SKUs?

Yes. We are ONE (formerly GMI) certified for offset printing and approve color against signed samples.
