Why do quotes for rigid gift boxes vary so much? Because a rigid box is built from several parts, and each one changes the price: the box style, the board, the wrap paper, the finishes, the insert, the quantity and the packing. There is no fixed price list. When you specify each part, you get a quote you can compare and rely on.

  • Lid-and-base and book-style rigid boxes; drawer boxes on request

  • Equipped with 5 Hongming automatic rigid lid-and-base box machines (models 350A, 6418G, 6418D)

  • Wrap paper printed on 4 offset presses: KBA Rapida 105-6+L, KBA Rapida 142-5+L, Heidelberg CD102 (5-colour) and Roland 900 (4-colour, 1.6 m)

  • FSC Chain of Custody certified (FSC-C157096); ONE (formerly GMI) certified

  • MOQ from 500 pcs, depending on product and process

This guide is for importers and brand owners in North America who are pricing rigid gift boxes for the next season. If you are pricing printed color boxes instead, see our color box cost drivers; this article covers the parts that are specific to rigid boxes.

1. Box style and construction

The style sets how the box is built. A lid-and-base box has a separate lid that fits over a base. A book-style box opens on a hinge like a book cover, often with a magnetic closure. A drawer box slides out of a sleeve. Each style uses a different amount of board and wrap, and needs different assembly steps, so the same outside size can quote differently in each style.

Lid-and-base boxes at BOYA run on our fully automatic Hongming rigid box machines. Tell us the style you want, or send a reference box, and we will tell you how it is built.

2. Board and size

Rigid boxes are built on rigid board (greyboard), which is then covered with wrap paper. The board is the structure of the box, so its thickness and the size of the box decide how much material goes into each piece. A heavier product, or a box that has to feel more solid in the hand, needs a thicker board.

What to send: the inside dimensions of the box, the weight of the product, and how the box will be used, for example retail display, gift set or shipping inside a carton. We can then suggest a board and confirm it on a sample.

3. Wrap paper and printing

The wrap paper is the part your customer sees. Printed coated paper is common; specialty, textured or coloured papers change the look and the price, and some have to be sourced for the project. For printed wraps, the number of colours, spot (Pantone) colours and how much of the sheet is covered with ink all affect the cost.

What to send: the paper type or a physical sample of the paper you want, your artwork or a reference photo, and any Pantone references. If a brand colour has to match across several SKUs, say so in the request.

4. Finishes

Lamination, hot foil, cold foil, embossing and spot UV each add a process step, and some need their own tooling, such as a foil block or an embossing die. Several finishes on one box add up. Ask which finishes actually sell the product: one well-placed foil logo often does more than a long list of effects. For how spot UV works on packaging, see what is spot UV.

What to send: each finish you want, where it goes on the box, and its rough size on the artwork.

5. Inserts

The insert holds the product in place and shapes the unboxing. Paperboard and foam inserts need different materials, cutting and fit checks, and an insert with many cavities for accessories takes more work than a simple tray. We quote the box and the insert separately, so you can see each part in the quote. To compare the two approaches, see our guide to paperboard vs foam inserts.

What to send: the product and every accessory that goes in the box, with sizes, and how the product should sit and be lifted out.

6. Closures

A magnetic closure on a book-style box adds magnets and an extra step in assembly. Write down the closure you want, so every supplier quotes the same thing.

7. Quantity and number of designs

Printing plates, cutting dies and finishing tooling are set-up costs that are spread over the run, so the unit price changes with quantity. Several SKUs that share one box size can share part of that set-up. MOQ from 500 pcs, depending on product and process.

What to send: the quantity per design and the number of designs.

8. Packing and delivery

Rigid boxes are bulky, so how they are packed in shipping cartons and where they go both change the quote. We can deliver to your assembly factory in China, ship FOB, or arrange DDP or delivery overseas; terms are confirmed per project.

What to send: the delivery address or port, and any packing requirement, such as boxes per carton or a polybag for each box.

9. Sample before the order

Sampling is available before mass production. A sample lets you check fit, closure and finish with your actual product before the run. For what to check, see our article on rigid box lid fit and sample approval.

FAQ

Q: How much does a custom rigid gift box cost?

There is no fixed price. The price depends on the box style, board, wrap paper, finishes, insert, quantity and packing. Send those details and we will quote your specification.

Q: Why do two suppliers quote different prices for the same rigid box?

They usually quoted different specifications, for example a different board, wrap paper, finish or insert. Send every supplier the same written specification so the quotes can be compared.

Q: Is the insert included in the box price?

We quote the box and the insert separately, so you can see each part in the quote.

Q: Do finishes like foil and embossing change the price?

Yes. Each finish adds a process step, and some need their own tooling. Tell us which finishes you want and where they go on the box.

Q: What is the MOQ for rigid gift boxes?

MOQ from 500 pcs, depending on product and process.

Q: Can we get a sample before the order?

Yes. Sampling is available before mass production. Specs follow the written confirmation.
