MOQ for Custom Printed Boxes: What 500–1000 Pieces Gets You

Short answer: Most custom printed boxes have a minimum order because every new design needs set-up work before the first good box comes off the press: printing plates, a cutting die, press make-ready and a sample. At BOYA Printing the standard MOQ is 500–1000 pcs per design, depending on specs. At that quantity you get the same presses and quality checks as a large order. The set-up is simply spread over fewer boxes.

Brands often search for "low MOQ packaging" when they launch a new product, test a new retailer or run many SKUs in small volumes. This guide explains where the MOQ comes from, what you get at 500–1000 pieces, and how to plan a small run so it still makes sense.

Why custom boxes have an MOQ

  • Plates: offset printing needs a set of plates for each design and colour.

  • Cutting die: each box structure needs its own die to cut and crease the board.

  • Make-ready: the press and the die-cutter need set-up time and some waste sheets before colour and registration are right.

  • Sampling: a structure and print sample is made and approved before mass production.

This work is almost the same for 500 boxes as for 50,000. That is why the MOQ is set per design.

What you get at 500–1000 pieces

A small run is not a lower-grade run. At our MOQ you still get:

  • Full offset print on the same presses as large orders: a KBA Rapida 105-6+L (6-colour + coater), a KBA Rapida 142-5+L (5-colour full-sheet), a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 (5-colour) and a Roland 900 4-colour with 1.6 m format.

  • Finishes available include: lamination, hot foil and cold foil, embossing, spot UV, window patching, water-resistant coatings and magnetic closures for gift boxes.

  • A real sample first. We test-fit the white sample with your real product before printing.

  • The same checks: we test samples in-house for burst strength and board compression before mass production.

  • FSC on request: we are FSC certified (FSC-C157096), so small runs can carry the FSC label too.

  • Delivery to your China assembly factory if your product is assembled in China. Delivery terms are confirmed per project.

MOQ by product type

Our standard MOQ is 500–1000 pcs per design, depending on specs. The exact figure depends on box size, board and structure. A large box with a complex insert behaves differently from a small tuck-end carton, so we confirm the MOQ on the quote.

How to make a small run work

  • Count per design, not per order. Ten SKUs at 500 pieces each is ten runs. Plan quantities SKU by SKU.

  • Reuse one structure. If several products fit the same box size, keep one structure and change only the artwork. One die can then serve the whole range.

  • Keep the finishes that matter. A foil logo or a spot UV highlight lifts a small range. Add finishes because they help sales, not out of habit.

  • Plan the repeat. If the product sells, the repeat order can reuse the approved sample, die and colour targets, so there is less to set up again.

  • Order inserts with the box. Ordering the box and insert together keeps them matched and avoids a second small run later.

Lead times for small runs

Typical lead times:

  • Color boxes and card boxes: typically 7–15 days, depending on specs.

  • Folding cartons: typically 10–25 days, depending on specs.

  • Gift boxes: typically 15–30 days, depending on specs.

What if you need fewer than 500?

Tell us the quantity anyway, with the box size and structure. We will tell you honestly whether the run makes sense for that structure, and suggest options such as a shared box size across SKUs.

What to send for an MOQ check

  • Product size and weight, or the inner box size in mm

  • Box style (color box, folding carton, gift box) or a photo of a reference box

  • Quantity per design and number of designs

  • Print colours and finishes

  • Delivery point: port of loading or your factory address in China
