ISTA 6 Packaging Testing: How to Choose the Right Protocol and Prepare Your Test Brief

Short answer: “ISTA 6” is not one universal packaging test. It is a family of ISTA Member Performance Tests built around defined retailer or carrier supply-chain conditions. Before requesting a quote or booking a laboratory, identify the full project name, shipping configuration, package revision and pass/fail criteria.

The current ISTA test-procedure list includes 6-AMAZON.COM-SIOC, 6-AMAZON.COM-Over Boxing and 6-SAMSCLUB. It also states that 6-FEDEX-A and 6-FEDEX-B are no longer ISTA 6-Series tests. A short label such as “ISTA 6A” is therefore not enough for a reliable packaging specification.

What ISTA 6 means for a packaging buyer

ISTA describes the 6-Series as Member Performance Tests created to reflect supply-chain elements that are specific to particular retailers or carriers. The individual project documents describe their testing as general simulation: the package and product are challenged against transport hazards represented by the defined distribution system.

This is different from a general promise that a carton is “strong” or from a single table-drop check. The package, product, handling route and shipping configuration are considered together. The test sequence and test levels depend on the project and the package classification, so the complete current procedure must be confirmed before samples are prepared.

Packaged products shipped through the Sam’s Club distribution system to final destinations in the United States, including different palletized, floor-loaded and product-condition categories.

Confirm the applicable product type and any separate retailer packaging requirements before testing.

Historical 6-FEDEX references

Does an inherited specification still mention 6-FEDEX-A or 6-FEDEX-B?

Older carrier-specific references that the current ISTA list identifies as no longer being 6-Series tests.

Ask the buyer or carrier to identify the current required test instead of copying an old label into a new quote.

Five questions to answer before selecting a test

  1. How will the final customer receive the product? Record whether the product ships in its own package, inside an over-box, on a pallet, through parcel delivery or through less-than-truckload handling.

  2. What is the actual product and package? Provide the product dimensions, weight, centre of gravity where relevant, fragility, liquid content, functional requirements and any parts that must remain undamaged.

  3. What happens before delivery? Describe fulfilment-centre handling, palletisation, floor loading, over-boxing, dunnage, store replenishment and any other handling that forms part of the intended route.

  4. What counts as failure? Agree in advance what constitutes product damage, leakage, loss of function, unacceptable cosmetic damage and unacceptable package degradation.

  5. Which version and laboratory apply? Check the current project version and confirm whether the objective is development testing, a customer-required report or an ISTA certification claim.

What to include in an ISTA 6 test brief

Acceptance criteria

Product damage tolerance, package degradation allowance, functional checks, leakage checks and the person or organisation responsible for approving the criteria.

Report requirements

Laboratory name, test date, project and version, sample count, replicate tests, findings, photographs, deviations and the final pass or fail determination.

ISTA’s guidelines for selecting and using test procedures recommend reviewing the test before it begins, using representative samples, defining damage and degradation criteria in advance, documenting the test as it is performed and checking the laboratory status when certification is required.

How ISTA 6 differs from a simple drop check

Depending on the project and package type, an ISTA 6 test may include atmospheric conditioning, shock or drop testing, random vibration, compression or clamping, tip-over, rotational impacts or leak testing. The SIOC overview shows different test blocks for different package types, while the current over-boxing overview defines a separate e-commerce configuration.

The exact levels, order and sample requirements belong to the current full project. A supplier’s internal drop or compression check can be useful during development, but it should be labelled as preliminary or internal testing unless the appropriate current ISTA project was performed and documented by the responsible laboratory.

How to review a supplier or laboratory quote

  • Exact protocol: The quote should name the complete project, not only “ISTA 6” or “ISTA 6A”.

  • Version: Record the project version and confirm that it is current for the buyer’s requirement.

  • Test configuration: Confirm whether the sample is SIOC, over-boxed, palletised, floor-loaded, parcel or LTL.

  • Samples: Ask how many samples are required and whether the sample plan changes for fragile, liquid, heavy, elongated or flat products.

  • Laboratory status: If the result will be presented as an ISTA certification claim, confirm that the test is performed in a current ISTA Certified Lab and that the certification conditions are met.

  • Acceptance criteria: Make sure the product damage tolerance and package degradation allowance are written down before testing.

  • Evidence: Request the report or agreed report contents, including the tested package description, sample identity, test date, findings and photographs.

  • Change control: Treat a change in board grade, flute, insert, closure, dimensions, product weight, product orientation, over-box or dunnage as a reason to ask whether the test result remains applicable.

ISTA’s guidance states that, for packaged-product certification, all samples must meet the specified criteria. It also distinguishes a certified test from a modified or informal test used only for development.

What an ISTA 6 result does not prove

  • It does not prove that a package has been tested for every carrier, country, route or handling environment.

  • It does not turn a package material or supplier into a universally certified solution.

  • It does not replace a retailer’s own packaging programme or current carrier requirements.

  • It does not automatically satisfy dangerous-goods or other legal transport requirements.

  • It does not remain automatically valid after the tested product or package configuration changes.

The ISTA SIOC overview specifically notes that the test does not necessarily comply with carrier packaging regulations and is not a substitute for United Nations or other required dangerous-goods tests. Treat the result as evidence for the defined project and tested configuration, then check whether additional requirements apply.

Frequently asked questions

Is ISTA 6 the same as ISTA 6A?

No. “ISTA 6A” is incomplete shorthand for a buyer specification. Ask whether the requirement is 6-AMAZON.COM-SIOC, 6-AMAZON.COM-Over Boxing or another current project, and record the version and shipment configuration.

Does every e-commerce package need 6-AMAZON.COM-SIOC?

No. The correct project depends on how the package moves through the intended distribution system. Send the product dimensions and weight, intended package format, shipment route, retail or e-commerce configuration, estimated quantity, artwork status, material preference, test requirement and delivery destination. If the requirement is ISTA 6, include the full project name or ask the buyer to confirm it.
