Counter Display Boxes for Hardware and Home Products: A Buyer's Spec Checklist
A counter display box (often called a PDQ, for "pretty darn quick") is the small printed tray that sits next to the register or on a shelf edge and holds a dozen or so units of one product. For hardware, plumbing, home and building-products brands selling into North American retail, it is often the first piece of packaging a shopper sees before the product's own color box. This guide covers what to specify, what to approve on the sample, and what to send your supplier so the display arrives ready to load and ship.
1. Start with the product, not the artwork
A display box is a structural job first and a print job second. Before anyone opens a design file, gather the following:
Unit dimensions and weight of the retail-packed product (the color box or blister card, not the bare item).
Units per display, and how they sit: upright, flat, in rows, or hanging.
The fully loaded weight. A tray of brass fittings or drill-bit sets weighs far more than a tray of cosmetics, and the board and flute choice must follow that.
Where it will live: checkout counter, shelf edge, or inside a larger floor display.
How it ships: packed inside a master carton, or shipped flat and assembled at the store.
If your products are assembled by a contract manufacturer in China, also confirm whether the display will be loaded at that factory. Loading at origin changes the requirements for the shipper carton and for how the display folds.
2. Choose the structure
Most counter displays fall into a few common styles:
Tray with a header card: a one-piece folding tray with a raised back panel for branding. Simple, economical to produce, and easy to assemble.
Tear-away lid display: the display travels closed like a shipper; the store tears off a perforated top and the tray is ready. This saves a separate outer box but needs a well-tested perforation.
Display with die-cut insert: an insert holds each unit in place. Useful for small or round items that roll or fall over.
Tiered display: two or three steps for mixed SKUs or different sizes.
For heavy hardware items, ask for corrugated board rather than folding carton board, and ask your supplier to explain the flute choice for the loaded weight. A front lip that bows outward after a week on the counter is the most common complaint retailers raise.
3. Print and finishing choices
Displays are viewed from close range under store lighting, so print quality matters. Typical finishes on the header card and tray include lamination, spot UV, hot foil, cold foil or embossing. A water-resistant coating can help where displays sit near sinks or in garden and outdoor sections.
Keep the design practical: put the brand and the key product benefit on the header, leave space if the retailer adds its own shelf label, and make sure the front lip does not hide the product's barcode or name.
Color consistency between the display and the products' own color boxes matters for brand presentation. BOYA Printing is GMI / ONE certified for lithographic offset printing in process and spot colors, and runs four offset presses: KBA Rapida 105-6+L, KBA Rapida 142-5+L, Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 and a 1.6 m Roland 900. Ask any supplier how they will match the display print to your existing packaging.
4. What to approve on the sample
Do not approve a display from a flat proof alone. Ask for a physical sample and load it with real product:
Fit: units should sit securely without being forced in or rattling around.
Strength: leave the loaded sample standing for several days and check the front lip and side walls.
Assembly: time how long it takes a store associate to fold it. If it needs instructions, print them on the inside flap.
Shipper fit: confirm how many displays fit in each master carton and how the cartons stack on a pallet.
Color: compare the sample against your approved proof and your product packaging under similar lighting.
Record approval points in writing, and keep one signed sample at each end as the reference for mass production.
5. Lead time, MOQ and certification
For counter display boxes, production time usually follows color box timing, typically 7–15 days, depending on specs. Larger display stands typically run 10–20 days, depending on specs. Structure, finishing, quantity and sample approval all affect the schedule, so plan the display alongside the product launch, not after it.
Our minimum order is typically 500–1,000 pieces, depending on the product. If your retailer or brand requires certified materials, BOYA Printing holds FSC Chain of Custody certification (FSC-C157096) and ISO 9001:2015 quality management certification.
6. A short checklist to send your supplier
Product packed dimensions, weight and units per display
Display style and where it will be placed in store
Artwork files with dielines, plus Pantone references for brand colors
Finishes required and any coating needs
Quantity, target in-store date and delivery address (overseas warehouse or your assembly factory in China)
Whether you need FSC-certified material
FAQ
What is the difference between a PDQ and a display stand?
A PDQ or counter display box is a small tray that holds one product type on a counter or shelf. A display stand is a larger floor unit, often with several shelves, that holds more stock and takes more space in store.
Can the displays be delivered to my product supplier in China?
Yes. We can deliver packaging directly to your assembly factory in China, so products can be loaded into displays before export. Delivery terms are confirmed per project.
Do you offer a sample before mass production?
Yes. We recommend a physical sample loaded with real product before you approve production.
